The Holy Spirit and His Roles

“I will pray to the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever – the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you…and the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” John 14:16-17, 26

God has given you a wonderful and precious gift in the Holy Spirit. In fact, Jesus said that it was for your advantage that He went to the Father, because He would give you the Holy Spirit. I remember reading that verse and thinking, “How can that be true? I think it would be better to have Jesus sitting next to me than the Holy Spirit inside of me.” However, God showed me through the Bible how wonderful the Holy Spirit is and the vital roles He plays in my life and relationship with God. I would like to share some of those roles with you today!

The Holy Spirit is with you. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit dwells with you and in you. This is a truly mind-blowing statement. The Spirit of God literally abides inside of you. In your hands, heart, and brain, and body, the Spirit of God is living and working. Wherever you go, whether it be home, school, practice, work, or church, He goes. It is as though Jesus Himself is walking next to you, speaking to you and guiding you. With the Holy Spirit inside of you, you are never alone. Ever. He is always with you, ministering His love to you and showing you how precious you are to Him. When you set foot in your school, God Himself is in your school, and His presence, power, and love is within you.

The Holy Spirit pours God’s love in your heart. In Romans 5:5, it says that God’s love has been poured out in your heart by the Holy Spirit. God gave you the Holy Spirit so that He could always be with you, inside you, always speak to you, and always show you His love. God loves you so much that He never wants to be apart from you. The Holy Spirit poured out God’s love in your heart, to the point where your heart is fully immersed and saturated with His love. You not only know that God loves you, but you have a real belief in and personal experiences with His love. In I John 4:8, it says that God is love. When the Holy Spirit poured God’s love in your heart, He literally poured God’s character and very nature into you. God has enabled you to become a partaker of His nature, the Divine Nature, the love nature. In every circumstance you are able to talk in love, think in love, and act in love, because His nature is your nature. This knowledge completely erases judgement, jealousy, or comparison, because you are secure in God’s love for you and share His love for other people.

The Holy Spirit teaches you. Jesus also said that the Holy Spirit is your Teacher. The Holy Spirit teaches you all things. This is amazing to me. God, who created the world and the most complex, creative, intricate structures, gave the Holy Spirit to you and wants to teach you and show you the beauty and wonder of His creation. Whether it be physics, chemistry, psychology, art, math, science, history, or business, the Lord created it and wants you to share in the joy and wonder of it. To quote E.W. Kenyon, “I don’t suppose there is a single weed but has within it something that’s of benefit, something that we could use in life’s work. Every tree, every shrub, every rock, and the ground we walk upon is teeming with unknown wealth. And He is going to be our teacher.” What a beautiful picture that is!

1 Corinthians 2:10 says, “But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.” The Holy Spirit knows everything about everything, and Jesus sent Him to be your Teacher. Whether you want to understand the spiritual truths and wisdom of the Bible, or the inner workings of God’s creation, the Holy Spirit is brimming with knowledge, wisdom, and revelation in every area of life and desperately wants to share it with you. There are mysteries in the world that still have not been solved, and discoveries in every field that are waiting to be uncovered.

With the Holy Spirit, you are not normal; you are not commonplace. When you partner with Him and ask Him to teach you and reveal to you more of the Father’s love, you become built up into a person who is fully assured and confident of your place in God’s kingdom. When you are taught by the Holy Spirit, you have wisdom and insight that no one else has. Creative ideas, questions, and inventions flow from your spirit. With the Holy Spirit, you are able to know, believe, experience, and share the overwhelming and life-changing love of God to everyone you meet.

With the Holy Spirit, you are never alone, you are able to know all things, and you are able to experience the fullness of God and His love. The most exciting thing is that this is not an exhaustive list of the roles of the Holy Spirit. He is much, much more and I encourage you to study His roles for yourself!
